SkiDUCK launched its East Coast program by bringing 20 kids from Bronx, NY for their first ski and snowboard lessons. The Hidden Valley Club provided lessons, rentals and lift tickets at no cost to participants, in an effort to introduce them to something they might not have otherwise experienced; the fun that can be had outside on snow during the winter months. Ambassador for Atomic Waymaker Ski Touring Team Explains " What It's All About"
World Cup winner and World Championship medal winner Kilian Jornet is the ambassador for the new Atomic Waymaker touring team challenge. He reveals in interview what it's all about, and tells us what ambitious project he has planned next.Kilian, what's so special about Atomic Waymaker?
It's an entirely new form of competition – which is based on stripping the sport back to its basics. Because with ski touring, it's not about the destination, it's about how to get there.
What's the most important aspect of the Waymaker challenge?
Familiarity with the route. You can only maximize the potential of the terrain if you know your way around. The Dachstein massif is the ideal backdrop for this event – you have this huge plateau, fantastic peaks, challenging climbs and descents ...
What's your advice to teams with their sights set on victory?
Go light on the equipment to increase freedom of movement. Pace yourself to get in as many peaks, downhills and climbs as possible. Work as a team – and don't forget to enjoy the great moments together.
Do the same rules apply to the "Summits of my life"? The project where you and your friends will be attempting to climb some of the world's most challenging peaks in as short a time as possible?
The two challenges have a lot in common. Both "Summits of my life" and Atomic Waymaker are more about experiences along the way rather than the destination. Plus both are first and foremost team events.
Your list includes Mont Blanc and The Matterhorn, Elbrus and McKinley, Aconcagua and Everest. How do you intend to set new records for climbing and descending most of these mountains?
Easy: we'll be carrying so little equipment that if we slow down, we'll get cold. So speed is the only option. (grins)
And you'll be skiing from the peaks back to the valleys?
Wherever possible. Not on The Matterhorn, obviously, but on Mont Blanc definitely, and on Everest it all depends on the weather.
What lessons can Waymaker participants learn from your training plan?
Be sure to move a lot on the mountain. Get a feeling for the mountain, learn where the right line is. Don't just focus on endurance, make sure your training plan is as varied as possible.
For the Waymaker challenge you'll be selecting two team-mates from the individual applicants rather than bringing your own team along. Based on what criteria?
They need to be in good shape. Because if I go too slowly, I get cold. And if I get cold, it's no fun. (Grins again)

Skiing News Beyond NJ: Ski Vermont Announces Cutting Edge Social Media Incentive Program
The Ski Vermont: Check In to Win program rewards skiers and riders when they check in at any Vermont ski resort via Foursquare or Facebook Places. It is the first statewide tourism program of its kind, promoting frequency and variety of visits to Vermont ski resorts via prize incentives.
“We know the ski community loves to share where they skied and how much vertical or powder they shredded with their friends,” said Sarah Neith of Ski Vermont. “This is an opportunity to not only reward our loyal customers with prizes and engage them with other Vermont brands, but also create a forum for them to come together and chalk up their bragging rights.”
Those who sign up for the program via skivermont.com/checkin will be encouraged to use the hashtag #vtskibrag to track their progress through the snowy mountains of Vermont and share conditions and pictures.
Incentive Prizes Abound
Every time a skier or rider checks in to a Vermont ski resort using either Foursquare or Facebook they are entered into the grand prize drawing for a 5 night Vermont ski and stay package for winter 2013-14. We encourage ballot stuffing!
Skiers and riders also get rewarded for exploring the state and visiting as many of our 18 resorts as possible. The more resorts participants check into the more prizes they’ll receive from the Ski Vermont prize vault. Some examples include Ski Vermont’s iconic posters, gifts from Cabot Cheese and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and of course free lift tickets to resorts yet uncharted!
Join the Challenge and #vtskibrag!
Ski Vermont’s Public Affairs Director, Sarah Neith has set her goals high. She’s hoping to ski all 18 of Vermont’s alpine resorts this season. Can you beat her to it? Join in on her adventures via her blog, Ski VT with Me, or follow her on Twitter @sarahneith for weekly updates on her adventures. Don’t forget, players are encouraged to brag at #vtskibrag!

Ski Season in New Jersey Can Also Mean Flu Season
We all know that the ski and winter outdoor activities season coincides with flu season. This year is a bad one.
As the flu continues to spread in New Jersey, everyone seems to know someone who is already suffering from the flu, or feels that they're "coming down with something" that could be the flu.
It is important to recognize the symptoms of the flu and then to seek the correct treatment.
Typical flu-like symptoms:
Fever (usually high)
Headache
Extreme tiredness
Dry cough
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle aches
Sore throat
Sometimes vomiting
Sometimes diarrhea
It is difficult to distinguish the flu from other infections on the basis of symptoms alone. A doctor’s exam may be needed to tell whether you have developed the flu or a complication of the flu. There are tests that can determine if you have the flu as long as you are tested within the first 2 or 3 days of illness.
If you develop flu-like symptoms and are concerned about your illness, especially if you are at high risk for complications of the flu, you should consult a healthcare provider. Those at high risk for complications include people 65 years or older, those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, and young children.
Seek emergency care for children with flu:
Fast breathing or trouble breathing
Bluish or gray skin color
Not drinking enough fluids
Severe or persistent vomiting
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Seek emergency care for adults with flu:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Ice Land Ice Skating Center in Hamilton, NJ
Ice Land Skating Center opened its doors in the early 1990s and has been providing the community with a place to enjoy ice related competitive sports and recreational activities for many years. Ice Land's current owners purchased the facility and business in early 2010 and are firmly committed to the support and advancement of youth athletic programs in the region.
It is the overall goal to make Ice Land the premier ice skating facility in the area with its mission to provide disciplined, competitive, and fun hockey and skating programs to teach and to nurture the potential budding hockey and figure skating stars of the future. Additionally, the owners want to provide a venue to promote fun and physical activities for both adults and children out on the ice with a variety of in-house leagues, clinics, and open skating for all to enjoy.
An ambitious facility improvement program this year included 1) the resurfacing of the ice and board repairs in Rink B; 2) interior painting of ceiling beams and locker rooms in both rink areas; 3) the replacement of scoreboards and locker room heaters; 4) the resurfacing of locker room and bathroom floors; 5) parking lot improvements including resealing, striping, and the addition of speed bumps for child safety; 6) the replacement of damaged bleachers; and 7) the addition of two (2) electric zambonis, a new dehumidifier in Rink A, and the addition of hundreds of pairs of rental skates. And don't forget about our new website launched in late 2010- a new and exciting way to keep informed about Ice Land activities and Mercer Chief team information and schedules.
Plans for the future include a remodeled pro shop, snack bar, and entrance lobby; the addition of an exercise room with state of the art equipment, a new roof and gutters over the front lobby area, expansion of existing hockey and skating programs, and new pro shop and snack bar offerings to meet the needs of our valued customers. The future looks bright at Ice Land…come see for yourself and enjoy the fun while you are there!
