The Ski Club of New Jersey is Seeking New Members
The Ski Club of N.J., the oldest ski club in New Jersey, was formed in 1938 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts from the YMCA in Hackensack, N.J. Skiing was just starting to get popular, and the Club, starting with 5 members, rapidly increased in membership. The Club from the very beginning stressed control skiing, instruction for beginners, and having great social activities (which they still have today). After a year or so in Hackensack, they moved to River Edge, NJ, where they shared space with the Bergen Players, an amateur theatrical group! In those days, skiing was mostly on Sundays, and trips were made to the Catskills, where we climbed the mountains. Many learned to ski on the golf course at Mohonk outside New Paltz, N.Y. Vacations were to Rutland. Pico (opened 1938), Stowe, North Conway, etc. In those days there weren't many areas with lifts, so vacations meant we could ride a lift! When World War II was declared 12-7-41, a high percentage of the Club joined the Services, both male and female. A number of our Club joined the 10th Mt Division ski troops, and served well during the war years. The Club also helped form the New Jersey Ski Council in 1939 and reactivated activities in 1946. A number of our Club served as officers of the NJSC, and went on to serve in the U.S. Eastern Amateur Association, as well as the National Ski Association.
In 1960, they purchased our own Lodge in Chittenden, VT. The Lodge is wholly owned by the Club, and is used year round for all type of activities. They are located not far from Killington and Pico, and they ski the areas in the vicinity of Rutland. Many of the members also ski our local NJ ski areas, as well as the lower Catskills. Over the years, a number of members turned professional, teaching at Killington, Aspen, Sun Valley, Steamboat, and other larger areas.
The Club also organizes vacation trips annually to various places in Europe, as well as to our major ski areas in the West and Canada. They have a long history in skiing and have enjoyed every minute of it.
Visit the Ski Club of New Jersey at their meetings held the second and fourth Thursday of each month, October through April, at the Maywood Inn, Maywood, NJ.

Athletes and Governors Encourage Winter Activity by Learning How to Ski or Snowboard - January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month
Several members of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team and some of our nation’s governors are encouraging children and adults to get some exercise this winter outdoors especially during January – Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and to take lessons from a professional instructor. Special deals on learning programs are taking place NOW at ski and snowboard areas in 34 states. “Humans Were Never Meant to Hibernate” is the mantra for the national initiative.
New Mexico Governor Susanna Martinez declared January Learn a Snow Sport Month in celebration of a statewide children’s program coordinated by Ski New Mexico and KOAT-& TV. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared “Discover Michigan Snowsports Month in his state.
“I started skiing when I was two and a half years old – in my driveway,” said the U.S. Ski Team’s Mikaela Siffrin. Her two recent World Cup slalom victories have some people calling her ‘the next Lindsey Vonn’. “January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month”, she said. “Let’s DANCE”.
Members of the U.S. Ski Team come from various parts of the U.S. and all started out by taking lessons from professional instructors. Shiffrin is from Colorado but trained at the Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont. Snowboarder Eric Willet also is from Colorado. Olympic Champion Julia Mancuso , Shannon Bahrke, Travis Ganong and Stacy Cook all hail from the Lake Tahoe, CA area. Pat Deneen is from Washongton state. Emily Cook is from Boston. Steve Nyman and Olympic medalist Ted Ligety are from Utah. Andrew Weibrecht is from Lake Placid, Leanne Smith is from New Hampshire (Cranmore).
“What I’m pretty stoked on is that I learned to snowboard from a professional,” said snowboarder Eric Willet, the 2012 Dew Tour winner. “Get out there and learn how to ride but, better yet, learn from a professional and have fun”.
These U.S, Ski and Snowboard Team athletes all have posted video messages at youtube.com. Access is learntoskiandsnowboardmonth.
Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month continues through January 31 although ski and snowboard lessons are available all season long. A companion program – the Bring a Friend Challenge – ends March 17, 2013. Prizes are available for those who introduce newcomers.

Beginners will enjoy newly designed teaching terrain that will make learning to ski or snowboard easier than ever before. More daring skiers and snowboarders can utilize the two new BagJump™ features. These inflatable stuntman-style landing pads, will allow guests to experience the thrills of big air and spins with the safety of an impact-free landing.
“The improvements made this year to Mountain Creek are nothing short of amazing. We now have destination level, world-class facilities that are well above anything within a four-hour drive of Manhattan. Regardless of if our guests are coming for the day or looking to make a weekend out of it, everything is in place to provide an incredible experience,” commented Bill Benneyan, Mountain Creek’s Chief Marketing Officer. “The technology in our rental center is truly next level, our snow tubing park is the biggest in the country and our terrain parks consistently win national recognition. Details on Mountain Creek’s improvements include:
- New Red Tail Lodge: Visitors to Mountain Creek’s blog (http://creektalks.blogspot.com/) have watched the extraordinary 55,000 square foot Red Tail Lodge take shape. Merging rustic charms with high-tech elegance, the lodge is comprised of three floors, two bars, a fine dining restaurant, indoor and outdoor dining options, and a state-of-the-art rental center. With all of these features packaged together under one roof, the Red Tail Lodge is easily one of the most modern and plush day lodges in the East.
- Revolutionary New Rental Center and Learn-To Area: Learning to ski or snowboard can be daunting. The physical experience of simply securing your rental equipment can be a tiresome process, which can make actually getting onto the snow to learn even more challenging than it needs to be. Mountain Creek’s new technology-driven rental system fills out your paperwork with just the swipe of a credit card or driver’s license, and then transports your equipment via a surface elevator to the new on-snow “Schoolyard” teaching area so it’s there waiting for you when you arrive. No fumbling required!

- Drop Zone Snow Tubing Park: With more than 35 lanes totaling six miles of runs, it will be the largest snow tubing facility in the country. In addition to the tubing chutes, there’ll be free-to-try demo skis and snowboards in the Snow Play Center, so inquisitive tubers who are eager to explore other winter activities can do so in a low-pressure setting.
- 2 New BagJump™ Air Bags: Get ready to take flight. If you’ve ever wanted to try a big jump without the hard landing consequences, Mountain Creek is making it easier than ever to be that daring skier or rider. Two new BagJump™ air bags, which are essentially inflatable landing pads that cushion landings off of jumps, will be located at the South Terrain Park and Vernon Base all winter long. These are the same landing bags that many professional athletes use for training and can be found at major resorts around the globe. More information on BagJump air bags is available online at (http://www.bagjump.com/).
